WW2 Rangoon Spitfire ace Wg Cdr G Piper 273 sqn signed JU52 RAF flown cover. Wg Cdr G.R. Piper was a Wing Commander and Spitfire pilot who served with No. 273 Squadron of the Royal Air Force. He is specifically noted for being a Spitfire pilot of 273 Sqn in Rangoon, 1945. The squadron was involved in operations in India and Burma during World War II. Specifically, 273 Squadron was initially formed in World War I, then re-formed in World War II as a torpedo bomber and reconnaissance unit in Ceylon (Sri Lanka). In mid-1944, the squadron transitioned to flying Spitfire Mk VIIIs and operated from airfields in India and Burma. Following the end of the war, the squadron moved to Siam (Thailand) and then French Indo-China (Vietnam). They were re-equipped with Spitfire Mk XIVs in November 1945 and disbanded in January 1946.
