Vintage Postcard Knight's Cross recipient of the Army Ernst Georg Buchterkirch. Unsigned. Born on 10 September 1914 in Stolp in Pomerania, he received the Knight's Cross on 29 June 1940 and the Oak Leaves on 31 October 1941 as a First Lieutenant and Company Commander in a Panzer Regiment. Ernst-Georg von Buchterkirch joined the Potsdam Cavalry Regiment in 1935. In 1937, he was promoted to lieutenant in the 6th Panzer Regiment. In 1938/39, he served in a tank unit of the Condor Legion in Spain. After returning to Germany, he became a platoon leader in the 2nd Company of the 6th Panzer Regiment. On June 29, 1940, he was awarded the Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross as a first lieutenant. Near Paris, he succeeded in capturing several bridges over the Seine, disabling six enemy tanks with his tank. At the start of the Russian campaign, he was a company commander. On June 23, 1941, his 2nd Company destroyed a total of 12 tanks near Buchowiecze. The following day, he and his company succeeded in forming the bridgehead at Minicze. For this, he was awarded the 44th Oak Leaves to the Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross on June 23, 1941. In August 1941, he was sent home as an instructor. On January 18, 1942, he was promoted to captain and on September 1, 1943, to major. After attending the War Academy, he joined the General Staff of the OKH in 1943 and ultimately served as a lieutenant colonel (Ia) in the command of Panzer Group West.
