August von Parseval (1861-1942) signed 5.5x3.5-inch photo. August von Parseval was a German military officer and airship designer who pioneered early flight mechanics. Alongside Hans Bartsch von Sigsfeld, he developed the Drachenballon (kite balloon), which was widely used by the military for tethered reconnaissance and artillery spotting. He designed twenty-six non-rigid or semi-rigid airships between 1909 and 1919 through the Luft-Fahrzeug-Gesellschaft (LFG). Unlike rigid Zeppelins, his airships could be deflated and packed away for easy ground transport. In April 1910, his amphibian flying boat design achieved liftoff, effectively marking the birth of German marine aviation.
