Beautiful old Orkney Chair - Measures  Argument over whether there would be a draw under the seat or not.  Believed to be made around 1910.  The Orkney chair is a unique piece of furniture with a history stretching back to the early 1700s in the Orkney Islands of Scotland. Originally, they were made by Orcadian farmers for their own use, using locally available materials like straw and driftwood. The design evolved from simple straw-covered stools to more elaborate chairs with wooden frames and straw backs. A notable figure in the chair's history is David Kirkness, a Kirkwall joiner who standardized the design and started producing them for sale in the late 19th century. The chair continues to be a popular, hand-crafted item, with only a few craftsmen in Orkney today still making them.
