Late Georgian Cast Iron Snail Inkwell - Beautiful Georgian inkwell with pen rest and patented deign - some refer to it as a shrimp inkwell.  You simply rotate the snail/shrimp to get access to the ink.  Beautiful form and function.  Inkwells, receptacles for ink used with a pen, have a long history, originating in ancient Egypt and evolving through various cultures and periods. Early forms were simple stone or ceramic containers with a hole to hold ink, used by scribes to write on papyrus. Over time, inkwells became more elaborate, particularly in Europe from the 16th century onwards, reflecting craftsmanship and social status. The invention of the fountain pen in the late 19th century gradually reduced the need for frequent dipping in ink, leading to the decline in the widespread use of inkwells.
