Set of First Edition of A History of the English-Speaking Peoples - Churchill - Printed after Winston S Churchill won the  Nobel Prize in Literature in 1953 and then published these in 1956 -58. A masterpiece of readable, popular history, it remains in print today. Churchill began his history during his period in the political wilderness in the early 1930s but did not complete it until the latter half of the 1950s, after his final retirement as prime minister. He presented a single intertwined narrative of the histories of Britain, the United States, and the empire's dominions. It was history as manifesto, setting out a vision of the English-speaking nations as bound by a common history and purpose; through stressing their shared heritage and destiny, Churchill, by birth half English and half American, believed he could cement the bonds between them. He consequently gave considerable attention to the key events of American history, especially the War of Independence and the Civil War.
