17th C Oak Twelve Plank Box - An evolution of the 6 plank box where folk would use to put their swords away when visiting.  This is from a rich family with their own blacksmith for the forged iron hinges. The have spent the extra money to enlarge the standaard six plank to a 12 plank chest covered in markings: Straight links following the line of the planks Chip Cuts to the edge of the front boards.  Stars and moons on the front and top  infinity energy symbols to the front boards, under the top.  A later lock obliterates those carvings where it is fitted.  Within the energy symbols we can also see Tulips.  This helps us date this box. whilst they have been making 6 plank coffers since the 5th Century, it is in 1580 that Tulip Mania took place and the rich started using its design in their furniture to represent wealth as one Tulip bulb was so expensive it became more valuable than a house!
