Original Oil Bormes les Mimosa by Thomas Symington Halliday - With frame, measures 26”w * 30”h. Thomas Symington Halliday MBE FRSA (1902-1998) Bormes Les Mimosa - oil on canvas. Scottish artist and teacher. Born in Thornhill near Dumfries, Halliday grew up on a farm. After attending Ayr Academy, he worked as a marine engineer in Glasgow before enrolling at the Glasgow School of Art. Halliday served as the Art Master at Prestwick High School for several years and also taught at Ayr Academy. In 1941, he was appointed principal of the art department at the High School of Dundee, a position he held until his retirement in 1965. During World War II, Halliday contributed to shipbuilding and naval camouflage operations on the Clyde, with two of his paintings later acquired by the War Artists’ Advisory Committee and now housed in the Imperial War Museum in London. He was also commissioned to paint a large mural depicting the Battle of Narvik for the Royal Naval Dockyard at Rosyth. In 1963, Halliday showcased his works with the New Scottish Group and continued to exhibit regularly with both the Royal Scottish Academy and the Royal Glasgow Institute of the Fine Arts. His contributions were recognised with an MBE in the same year.
