Bidspirit auction | Abstract Jade Sculpture from Hanperiod

Abstract Jade Sculpture from Hanperiod (206 BC - 220AD) - Wengzhong, China, Han period (about 206 BC to 220 AD), made of dark green jade. This highly abstracted sculpture is a popular motif of the Han period. Performed similar to the Hanbadao style. Weng means ”old man” and Wengzhong are the ”venerable sages” on the road Shendao spirits. This often depicted figure shows a motif of the Han period and is very striking, pointed triangular head, covered with what belongs to the court dress hat and the two halves of the face disposed of minimalist expression. The only hinted beard on his chin and two short scores for the eyes, one for the mouth - then the gaze is directed at the viewer, unmoved face. Through the rear portion of the high-hat runs a bore at this eyelet such figures were also used as amulets. The figure wears a cape, the shoulders are narrow and, as in all known Jades of this type, the lower ends are bent down, including even a dress, from which the shoes look. Dark green jade, stronger on one side of incrustations, suitable for museum collection. Provenance: Private Collection Old French, ex collection G. Marris.
