The 275 year old document details the brutal enslavement of the crew of the Inspector privateer, commanded by Capt. Richard Veale, under Emperor Muley Abdallah in Morocco from January 1746 to December 1750, ending with their release through ransom. . The Inspector privateer was captured by Moorish forces, leading to the imprisonment of its crew. The captives faced extreme hardships, forced labor, and severe punishment under the ”despotic Government” of Muley Abdallah. . The captives were released through the efforts of William Latton, Esq., and the bounty of King George II. . It’s a fascinating document and we have to be careful not to believe everything we read but it adds another dynamic to how the world operated, . Given the slave trade had started in the 16th Century this account of African men enslaving white Europeans might be described as a case of ‘learned behaviour’. . Often historical artefacts like this end up in the hands of those who least expect they shall – for instance we know a prominent Afro-Caribbean feminist within Hollywood collects ephemera relating to the slave trade. . Why? . We can only assume they never want to forget the horror those in power subjected onto others and learn not only how it has shaped our present, through history, but ensure it never happens again.
