Temora & other poems – 1763 translated by James Macpherson 3. Hugh Blair’ s Critical dissertation on the poem the Ossian in 1763 We understand the first two books were James Macpherson translating oral Gaelic history into written form. As the critical dissertation states it was a good attempt at translation, but clunky. Later it was dismissed as false by Samuel Johnson and to this Day the BBC & British Museum stand by that. Scottish commentators consider it genuine and Macpherson as the Scottish equivalent of Homer. It is well-documented that Napoleon Bonaparte was an admirer of The Poems of Ossian and carried a copy with him on his military campaigns. He reportedly took a copy of the translated poems with him to Egypt, on various European campaigns, and finally to his exile on St. Helena. Burns named his dog Luath was named after a hunting dog belonging to Cuchullin (Cuchulain) in the epic poem Fingal, which was written by James Macpherson and attributed to the 3rd-century legendary Gaelic poet Ossian Scottish Heritage, First Editions 283 years old.
