A Deakin and Francis Sterling Silver Cigarette Case with 9 carat Gold Plaque and a Sterling Silver Watch Fob - This lot features two silver items: a sterling silver cigarette case and a separate silver watch fob. The cigarette case is of rectangular form with a curved profile and rounded corners designed for pocket carry. The exterior is fitted with an applied 9 karat gold shield-shaped plaque. The interior is finished with a gold-wash vermeil and retains one section of a brown elastic strap. The accompanying sterling silver fob features a decorative scrolled border with a central, unengraved rose gold shield on the obverse. The 9 karat gold plaque on the cigarette case is engraved with a presentation inscription: To E. LAWRENCE WILLIAMS from THE STAR EDITORIAL on his 70th Birthday 28.9.28. The cigarette case interior is hallmarked for Birmingham, 1928. Marks include the maker's mark D & F for Deakin and Francis in a rectangular cartouche, a lion passant indicating sterling silver, an anchor for the Birmingham assay office, and a lowercase date letter d for the year 1928. The 9 karat gold plaque on the case is hallmarked with D & F, a crown, the numbers 9 and 375 (indicating 9 karat gold purity), and a lowercase date letter d. The silver fob reverse is engraved with SHERWOOD F. S. and E. Lee.
