Early 19th Century Mahogany Banjo Barometer by J. Eames of Bath - A nineteenth-century mahogany banjo-style mercury wheel barometer by J. Eames, Broad Street, Bath. The case is constructed with figured mahogany veneers and features scrolled volutes at the shoulders and a matching scrolled base. The neck houses an inset mercury-in-glass thermometer with a silvered scale graduated from 0 to 130 degrees Fahrenheit, including temperature markings for Freezing, Tempe, Sumr Heat, Blood Heat, and Fever Heat. The main circular dial is silvered brass with engraved lettering and a central starburst motif. The dial is inscribed J. EAMES at the top and Broad Street BATH at the bottom. Weather indications include Stormy, Much Rain, Rain, Change, Fair, Set Fair, and Very Dry, with a barometric scale ranging from 28 to 31 inches. The dial is protected by a convex glass cover within a brass bezel and features a blued steel indicator hand alongside a brass recording hand. A bone setting knob is located below the main dial for adjusting the recording hand. The reverse of the case is finished in black paint and includes a metal hanging loop at the top.
