Bidspirit auction | David Crichton Edinburgh Mahogany Astronomical
David Crichton Edinburgh Mahogany Astronomical Regulator Clock - Precision astronomical regulator longcase clock by David Crichton of Edinburgh. The clock is housed in a slender mahogany case featuring a flat pediment above a circular glazed dial door and a full-length glazed trunk door. The silvered brass regulator dial is engraved David Crichton on the left and Edinburgh on the right. The dial layout is designed for precision timekeeping, featuring a large outer minute track, a subsidiary seconds dial at the 12 o clock position, and a subsidiary Roman numeral hour dial at the 6 o clock position. The high-grade, weight-driven mechanical movement is equipped with a mercury-compensated pendulum. This pendulum consists of a glass jar containing mercury suspended within a brass frame, a design intended to maintain a consistent pendulum length despite temperature changes. A brass beat scale is mounted at the base of the trunk to measure the arc of oscillation, marked from 0 in the center to 3 on either side. The movement is powered by a single cylindrical metal weight. Dimensions: Approximately 75 to 85 inches in height.
