George III Walnut Longcase Clock by Thomas Phippard, Poole - This George III walnut longcase clock features an eight-day, twin-train, weight-driven movement striking on a bell. The 12-inch arched brass dial is inscribed with the maker name Thomas Phippard, Poole in script at the base of the chapter ring. Thomas Phippard (sometimes spelled Phippard or Phippard) was an 18th-century clock and watchmaker based in Poole, Dorset. Born in 1722, he was apprenticed in London in 1738 before working in Poole from 1756 until his death in 1768. He is best known for crafting fine oak longcase (grandfather) clocks The arch contains a central circular boss engraved with a bird and the motto TEMPUS FUGIT, flanked by cast brass dolphin spandrels. The silvered chapter ring displays Roman numeral hour markers and Arabic numeral minute markers at five-minute intervals. The matted brass dial center includes a subsidiary seconds dial and a square date aperture. The corners are decorated with cast brass spandrels featuring cherub heads and scrolling foliage. The clock is fitted with ornate pierced steel hour and minute hands. The walnut case is designed with a swan-neck pediment hood supported by columns. The trunk has a long door with a shaped arch top and a brass escutcheon, sitting on a square plinth base with a molded top edge. A paper label for Henry Woods of Minehead Antique Furniture is affixed to the interior backboard of the hood.
