17th Century Scottish Copperplate Engraving of The Channery Town of Ross - A 17th-century copperplate engraving on paper depicting a bird's-eye view of Channery in Ross-shire, Scotland. The image presents the coastal town, now known as Fortrose, situated along the Moray Firth. The composition includes a pastoral foreground featuring hunters and hounds on a hillside, leading to the town center with its prominent cathedral and residential buildings. The distant coastline and several sailing vessels are visible on the water. The lower margin contains the printed title CHANONRIA Civitatis ROSSIAE. The CHANNERY Town of Ross. A distinct plate mark is present around the perimeter of the image area. The reverse of the frame features a printed label with a decorative border reading EXPERIENCED PICTURE LINERS / Aitken Dott & Son / May 1842: / CARVERS & GILDERS / 26 SU. CASTLE ST / EDINBURGH. Handwritten notes in pencil and blue ink on the backing board identify the scene as a view of Moray Firth and Cromarty and state Aitken Dott and Son say this picture was made between 1650 and 1660.
