A 19th Century Hardwood Walking Wheel with Accelerating Head - A 19th-century walking spinning wheel, also known as a great wheel, constructed from dark-stained hardwood. Local to Tain The device features a large diameter wheel with twelve turned spokes and a thin bentwood rim, mounted to a three-legged bench-style base. It includes a geared wooden accelerating head designed to increase spindle rotation speed through a system of integrated wooden gears. The wheel is supported by a single upright post, while the accelerating head is mounted on two turned posts at the opposite end of the rectangular bench. No maker marks, stamps, or signatures are visible on any of the wooden or metal components.
