An Early 20th Century Cooke, Troughton & Simms Brass Theodolite - An early 20th-century British vernier transit theodolite manufactured by Cooke, Troughton & Simms, Ltd., housed in a fitted mahogany transport case. The instrument is constructed from brass with a black-enameled finish and features an integrated anallactic telescope system. The assembly includes various adjustment knobs, spirit levels, and a circular vertical scale, all secured within a green felt-lined mahogany box. One level vial is marked 1 DIV = 40” and a selection of accessories is present, including a plumb bob, a small wrench, and several adjusting tools. The base of the instrument is engraved COOKE, TROUGHTON & SIMMS, LTD. LONDON & YORK. Nº 35031. An oval brass plate inside the lid lists additional manufacturer locations in Cape Town and Johannesburg, and a rectangular instruction plate notes the telescope has no constant to add to calculations. A paper shipping label addressed to Mr. J. D. Mackenzie at Tain Royal Academy is affixed to the case exterior. Inventory numbers reading T18 are hand-painted in white on both the instrument base and the lid of the wooden case.
