A Pair of 19th Century Chinese Northern Elm Low-Back Armchairs - A pair of 19th-century Chinese low-back armchairs constructed from solid northern elm. The chairs are assembled with traditional mortise and tenon joinery and feature rectangular panel-in-frame seats. Each low-back frame contains openwork scrolling motifs and a geometric fretwork gallery positioned above the seat level. Relief-carved scrolling motifs decorate the front aprons above square-section legs joined by peripheral stretchers. A circular red wax seal is impressed on the frame of each chair, shows they were approved for Export by the Chinese government.
