Bidspirit auction | A 19th Century D. Pignus
A 19th Century D. Pignus Signed Mother-of-Pearl and Silk Folding Fan - An antique folding fan featuring hand-painted silk and iridescent mother-of-pearl. The fan is constructed with pierced and carved mother-of-pearl sticks and guards. The outer guards are decorated with intricate scrollwork and a small crown motif at the top. The leaf consists of a hand-painted silk panel bordered with machine-made blonde lace trim. A multi-strand silk ribbon tassel is attached to the metal loop at the pivot point, which is capped with a small pearl-like bead. The silk leaf displays a pastoral scene featuring a woman in a white gown surrounded by cherubs. A signature is painted in the lower left corner of the leaf, which reads D. Pignus. The mother-of-pearl components show a high degree of iridescence. No other maker marks or labels are visible on the sticks or metal hardware.
