Early 20th Century Wittnauer Nickel-plated Brass Pocket Compass - An early 20th-century Wittnauer pocket compass manufactured from nickel-plated brass. The instrument is housed in a hunter-style pocket watch case with a top-mounted pendant and a push-button release to open the hinged lid. The interior features a glass-covered dial with a central jewel-mounted blued steel needle and a printed eight-point star. The dial is oriented for field use with North positioned at the bottom near the hinge and South at the top. The dial is printed with the maker name WITTNAUER in an arch and a stylized fleur-de-lis at the North position. The case back is stamped with the block letters U.S. while the front lid displays a hand-engraved cursive inscription that reads D. H. Hess, Hamlin, Hants.
