I studied Aesthetics at Masaryk University Brno and have previously exhibited around Europe in Barcelona, Prague, Brno, Florence and London including the Concrete and Glass Saatchi exhibition.I believe very much in the power of colour to create meaning by stimulating an emotional realism in abstract, symbolic or part-abstract paintings.I seek to be a vivid colourist who creates layers of meaning from seemingly simple imagery and often signposts to a darkness beneath the surface of the light.My work is characterised by my deep respect for nature and aims to hint at ambiguity and uncertainty, implied narrative and a social/political consciousness that relates the specific to more universal themes.Being a migrant, born and raised under communism, I now live and paint in Sussex and cherish the freedom to be your natural self and express dissent.Title--Madonna--Description--Madonna.Nakba in Arabic means ‘the disaster’ or ‘the catastrophe’ as well as referring specifically to the catastrophic event of 1948 when an estimated 750000 Palestinians fled or were expelled from their homes and lands as a result of Israeli action. This oppression of Palestinians included the uprooting of their ancient olive trees that supported many families for centuries and it is still going on today.The painting presents this cataclysm as a universal trope of suffering, displacement, and stoicism in the face of tyranny and cruelty.The universality of the mother and child imagery represent the overarching link between faiths, suffering and survival–this can be the Madonna, a displaced Palestinian or Jew and any woman protecting her child from tyranny.This painting was informed by Dr. Gabor Mate discussing Trauma and Israel. As an immigrant I relate to the themes of displacement and oppression and I hope this painting highlights the need for tolerance and respect for differences, no matter what culture or religion.
