Italian wooden Sedan Chair - Italian wooden Sedan Chair, c.1770, poles can be removed to allow passenger exit, sells with poles, 31” x 98” x 58”H (with poles) -Good original condition > HISTORY: The sedan chair, an enclosed seat carried by two men holding poles 10 to 12 feet long, appeared in England in the late 16th century from Italy and Spain. They were seen as an alternative to the hackney coaches clogging London streets. Highly decorated and used mainly by aristocrats who maintained private bearers to carry their own chairs. The seat is enclosed in a wooden framework covered with leather and has a front door with glass in it. The poles are inserted lengthwise into fixed metal brackets and are removed to permit the passenger entry. *NOTE: BUYER TO ARRANGE PICKUP. This item MUST be removed from the premises by JUNE 27.
