Signed ”Groh.” Edition 2/30. Approximately 11.75W x 10.5H x 9.25D in. Measurements include base. Born in the Alsace region of France, Marianne de Hatten Groh began sculpting in childhood and received her formal art training in Strasbourg. After moving to California in 1959, she became a vital figure in the Santa Cruz and Los Gatos art communities, both as a sculptor and an influential teacher. Working primarily in terra cotta and bronze, de Hatten Groh’s expressive forms have been exhibited in galleries throughout California, the American Southwest, Hawaii, and at the National Museum of Women in the Arts in Washington, D.C., among others. She is perhaps best remembered for her graceful depictions of ballerinas, and playful renderings of children- both beautifully expressed in this work. The pieces offered here come directly from the estate of the artist and represent the first major collection of de Hatten Groh’s sculptures ever offered at auction.
