Originally trained as a geologist, he became a leading figure in rephotography, and his work has been exhibited internationally and is held in museum collections worldwide, including the Museum of Modern Art, New York; Museum of Fine Arts, Houston; Smithsonian American Art Museum; and the National Gallery of Art, Washington, D.C.
