Large Hand-Painted Scenic Wallpaper Mural Depicting Lower Broadway, New York, 19th-Early 20th C. - A large-scale scenic wallpaper mural, hand-painted in grisaille tones on linen-backed paper, depicting an idealized view of lower Broadway in New York City with neoclassical buildings, carriage traffic, pedestrians, and landscaped promenades. Architectural details include façades labeled ”1 Broadway” and ”Bay Hoise.” Notably, the scene incorporates curving iron fencing and formal green space closely resembling period depictions of Bowling Green, reinforcing the association with the civic landscape at the southern terminus of Broadway. The structure labeled ”1 Broadway” appears to reference the 1745 Kennedy mansion. Reportedly removed from a New York City brownstone during renovation in the 1950s. The reverse of one panel bears a partially legible printed stamp that appears to read ”Please Return [illegible] Lexington Ave. N.Y.C.” suggesting a New York-based decorator, studio, or supplier associated with the original production of the mural.
