A Pair of Chinese Silk Embroideries Depicting Birds and Blossoms - A pair of 20th-century Chinese silk embroideries worked in polychrome threads on a cream-coloured silk ground. The first embroidery depicts a rich scene with a central phoenix perched upon a gnarled tree branch, surrounded by blossoming peonies and plum or cherry flowers. The composition includes a crane in flight, a pair of ducks on water, and smaller songbirds set against a background featuring a prominent red sun. The upper left corner bears a four-character inscription in black ink reading 鸟语花香 (Niao yu hua xiang), a traditional idiom translated as birds sing and flowers are fragrant. The second embroidery depicts two peacocks perched on a blossoming branch interspersed with bamboo leaves, featuring detailed plumage with vibrant colours and eye patterns. This panel bears the four-character inscription 雀开春色 (Que kai chun se) to the left side, likely referring to the peacock revealing the colours of spring, accompanied by a red square seal mark. Both pieces are housed in modern gold-toned frames under glass.
