A Sudanese kaskara sword, late 19th or early 20th century - A Sudanese kaskara sword, a traditional weapon characteristic of the Sudanic regions of North and East Africa, often associated with the Mahdist War era. The sword features a straight, double-edged steel blade tapering toward a blunt, rounded tip. The blade incorporates a central fuller running a portion of its length. Faint incised marks are present on the blade near the hilt, though they are obscured by oxidation. The hilt comprises a broad, cruciform iron crossguard with blocky, flared terminals. Both the crossguard and the grip are wrapped in dark leather, which is decorated with stamped geometric patterns, including diamond motifs and star-like shapes at the terminals. The hilt is topped with a characteristic large, flat, disc-shaped steel pommel featuring a central peened tang. Overall length: 61 cm Blade length: 50 cm Crossguard width: 12.5 cm.
