A 20th Century Japanese Satsuma Style Ceramic Baluster Vase - This Japanese earthenware vase is of baluster form with a short neck and flared rim. The piece is decorated in the Satsuma style, featuring a cream-coloured crackle glaze ground. The hand-painted polychrome and gilt decoration depicts two songbirds, one in flight and one perched on a branch, amongst large pink and green rose blossoms with accompanying buds and foliage. The decoration utilizes raised enamel highlights and gilding to provide texture. The shoulder features a complex decorative border with turquoise scrollwork, a dark blue band with white raised enamel dots, and a cross-hatched lattice pattern. The rim and base are finished with a reddish-brown ground and gilded scrolling motifs. The base of the vase bears a red rectangular stamp with the text HAND PAINTED SATSUMA and a secondary small circular mark in gold pigment containing the numeral 29. Height: 300mm Base diameter: 110mm.
