A mid-20th-century Cinque Ports Pottery The Monastery Rye earthenware vase - This mid-20th-century studio pottery vase was produced by Cinque Ports Pottery at The Monastery in Rye, East Sussex. The vessel is designed with a flared rim above a constricted neck and a bulbous ovoid body that tapers to a narrow circular foot. The interior of the neck is finished with a deep chocolate brown glaze. The exterior decoration consists of hand-painted horizontal bands in mustard yellow and teal set against a speckled matte cream ground. The lower two-thirds of the body features a textured mesh pattern of vertical and horizontal lines in variegated shades of green and brown. The base bears a circular blue ink backstamp reading CINQUE PORTS POTTERY LTD. around the outer edge and THE MONASTERY RYE to the centre. There is an additional hand-painted mark in brown glaze resembling a horseshoe or a lowercase u.
