Bidspirit auction | A Japanese Eggshell Porcelain Lithophane

A Japanese Eggshell Porcelain Lithophane Tea Service - A Japanese eggshell porcelain tea service, typically produced for the export market during the mid-20th century. The service features hand-painted overglaze enamel decoration and gilding in a traditional landscape motif, depicting figures in kimonos walking amongst cherry blossoms, pine trees, and thatched-roof dwellings. A key feature of this service is the lithophane of a geisha face in the base of the cups, visible when held to a light source. The pieces are finished with a gold-coloured geometric fret border to the rims and handles. The set comprises one lidded teapot, eight plates and saucers, and three cups and tea bowls. Precise measurements are not available.
