Bidspirit auction | Group of 25 documents of
Group of 25 documents of the Rizel family, Brazil and Palestine (E.I.), 1929-1947. A single group holding together four worlds of one Jewish immigrant family in Brazil. The lot spans 18 years, from 1929 to 1947, and documents the family at three centres: Capella Nova do Betim on the Oeste de Minas railway, Belo Horizonte the capital of the state of Minas Gerais, and Rio de Janeiro. The dated documents are of 1929, 1931, 1932, 1934 (two) and 1947. Two figures lead the group: Leao Rizel (in the British document Leon Rizil), joint owner with his brother of the poultry farm GRANJA MINAS GERAES, and Salomao Rizel (also written Schalom and Schalon), a partner in a food plant in Belo Horizonte and a registered inventor. The group includes a British visa for Palestine of 1934, granted on the basis of Ottoman nationality, and documents of 1947 concerning sons in Jerusalem for whom CID clearances and birth certificates were required before the Brazilian legation in Beirut. The farm's letterhead is pre-printed DE 193, that is to say produced for use in the 1930s, and Capella Nova do Betim changed its name to Betim on 1 January 1939, which places this paperwork before that date. To this day a street in Betim, in the Filadelfia quarter, is named after Leao Rizel, RUA LEAO RIZEL. The family name appears in the group in four spellings, as is common among immigrants: Rizel, Rizil, Risel and in Hebrew Rizel. The group comprises handwritten letters in Portuguese on the GRANJA MINAS GERAES letterhead, handwritten letters in Hebrew, telegram forms of the DEPARTAMENTO DOS CORREIOS E TELEGRAPHOS, franked envelopes and official documents. Toned paper, fold marks, tears and wear at the edges. Mixed condition, exactly as photographed. Units in lot: 25
