He worked in the coalmines at a young age, and actually uses self-prepared tar in his paintings today to pay homage to his difficult past. In 1973, he began studying lithography and silk-screening at the Polytechnic Academy in Munster. In 1983, Gockel and his wife founded the top-ranked art publishing company, Avant Art. He had the pleasure of meeting Salvador Dali and Joan Miró during his travels, and they served as great sources of inspiration to him.
