He worked in the coalmines at a young age, and actually uses self-prepared tar in his paintings today to pay homage to his difficult past. In 1973, he began studying lithography and silk-screening at the Polytechnic Academy in Munster. In 1983, Gockel and his wife founded the top-ranked art publishing company, Avant Art. He had the pleasure of meeting Salvador Dali and Joan Miró during his travels, and they served as great sources of inspiration to him. Influenced by symbols and designs from cultures around the world, Gockel expresses his emotions through live action painting, using mostly primary colors. He was commissioned by the United States Olympic Committee to create official artwork for the 2006 Olympics in Turin, Italy.
