Romeyn de Hooghe - Deroute du Pont Farnese / The Destruction of the Farnese Bridge - ”Deroute du Pont Farnese” A striking depiction of the battle for Antwerp, with a cartouche in the lower corner explaining the people, places, and events. In the center, a captivating explosion, from which only a few can escape. Below, the commander Alessandro Farnese (1545-1592), lying on the ground with a drawn sword and a weary gaze. Soldiers, boat, and bridge parts fly through the air, floods of water overwhelm the Spanish army, with cannons and rifles. In the background, ships are burning, and on the remaining part of the bridge, dead soldiers lie. Romeyn de Hooghe (1645–1708) was a renowned Dutch artist, engraver, and illustrator during the Baroque period. He was particularly known for his skill in engraving and was considered one of the most prominent Dutch printmakers of his time. De Hooghe created a wide range of works, including historical scenes, allegorical compositions, and portraits. His engravings often had a detailed and dramatic style, reflecting the Baroque emphasis on emotion and grandeur. Apart from his engravings, de Hooghe also worked as a book illustrator and was involved in the design of various political and satirical works. His contributions to the art world made him a key figure in Dutch 17th-century art and printmaking.
