Anders Fredrik Skjöldebrand (1757–1834) – ”Montée des Alpes Boréales” – Aquatint Engraving (c. 1801–1802) - A dramatic alpine scene from northern Scandinavia, rendered with precise tonal gradation and atmospheric perspective. This aquatint engraving shows a steep mountain gorge with a powerful waterfall cascading through rocky terrain, surrounded by richly wooded slopes and distant peaks. The title, Montée des Alpes Boréales, refers to the ascent into the ”Boreal Alps” — a poetic name sometimes used for the mountainous regions of northern Sweden or Norway. Drawn by Swedish artist and explorer Anders Fredrik Skjöldebrand during his expedition to the North Cape, this engraving is part of the influential publication Voyage pittoresque au Cap Nord.
