Johannes Janssonius (1588–1664) – Map of the Limousin Region in France – Large Hand-Colored Copperplate Engraving (1640)
"Totius Lemovici et Confinium Provinciarum quantum ad Dioecesin Lemovicensen spectant"This large, finely detailed map depicts the Limousin region in central France. Originally created by Jean Fayen and first published in 1594, this map was later incorporated into Johannes Janssonius's atlases around 1640. It offers an intricate portrayal of the area's topography, including cities, towns, rivers, and forests. An inset plan of the city of Limoges provides additional detail, while decorative elements such as a cartouche and a dedication to Annetus de Lévis, Duke of Ventadour, enhance its aesthetic appeal.Johannes Janssonius was a prominent Dutch cartographer and publisher during the Golden Age of Dutch cartography. He was known for his detailed and accurate maps, often collaborating with other notable cartographers of his time. His works significantly contributed to the development of early atlases and European cartography.Artist or Maker:Johannes JanssoniusDimensions:57 cm x 47 cmMedium:Hand-Colored Copperplate EngravingDate:1640Condition Report:This work is in good condition overall.
