Guillaume Sanson (1633–1703) – Map of the Circle of Swabia / La Souabe ou le Cercle de Souabe – Large Copperplate Engraving (Paris, 1669)
This copperplate map titled La Souabe ou le Cercle de Souabe shows the administrative and political divisions of the Swabian Circle within the Holy Roman Empire, including ecclesiastical, secular, and Habsburg territories. It covers key regions such as Württemberg, Baden, Alsace, and parts of Bavaria and Tyrol, with detailed labeling of towns, rivers, and mountain ranges. The decorative cartouche identifies the author as S. Sanson, referring to Guillaume Sanson, who succeeded his father Nicolas Sanson, the founder of modern French cartography. The map was published by Pierre Mariette in Paris in 1669 and is representative of the restrained, data-focused French cartographic style of the 17th century. Guillaume Sanson (1633–1703) was a royal geographer who collaborated with leading Parisian publishers and continued the family’s influential atlas production well into the late 17th century.Artist or Maker: Guillaume SansonDimensions: 50 cm x 45 cmMedium: Copperplate EngravingDate: 1669Condition Report:This work is in good condition overall.
