Robert Bénard (1734–1777) – Head of a Warrior from New Zealand – Copper Engraving (Late 18th Century) - This powerful copper engraving, titled Tête d’un Guerrier de la Nouvelle Zélande, presents a detailed portrait of a Māori warrior, drawn in profile and adorned with full-face moko (traditional facial tattooing), a feathered cloak, and carved ornamentation including a pounamu pendant. The warrior's hairstyle, ornamented ear plug, and weaponry highlight key elements of Māori identity and craftsmanship. The engraving is marked Tome III. Pl. 12 and was created under the direction of Robert Bénard as part of a French Enlightenment-era voyage report—most likely from Voyage de La Pérouse autour du monde (1797) or a closely related Pacific expedition.
