George Edwards (1694–1773) – Il Pellicano d’America – Copperplate Engraving from Il Gazzettiere Americano (Livorno, 1763) - This copperplate engraving titled Il Pellicano d’America is based on an original ornithological plate by British naturalist George Edwards, first published in 1746 in A Natural History of Birds. The image was re-engraved by V. Vanni for the Italian edition of Il Gazzettiere Americano, published in Livorno in 1763. It depicts a New World pelican perched on a rocky outcrop, with stylized coastal flora and a decorative ribbon cartouche bearing the title. Edwards’ original was among the earliest scientific bird illustrations printed in color in England and was widely admired and adapted across Europe.
