Denis Diderot (1713–1784) – Set of 2 Engravings – Surgical Instruments and Anatomy from Encyclopédie ou Dictionnaire raisonné des sciences, des arts et des métiers – Copperplate Engravings (c.1760s) - This set of two original copperplate engravings presents surgical tools and anatomical diagrams from the celebrated Encyclopédie project. The left plate (Pl. 36) shows facial supports, corrective straps, and early maxillofacial braces, including a depiction of a patient fitted with a chin apparatus. The right plate (Pl. 5) illustrates probes, sounds, and internal anatomical cross-sections related to urology and gynecology. Both sheets are labeled “Chirurgie, ” indicating their place within the medical volumes of the encyclopedia.
