Giovanni Giacomo De Rossi (1627–1691) – Thermæ Traiani Imperatoris in Monte Aventino Ad – Copperplate Engraving from Splendore dell’Antica Roma (circa 1625) - This architectural copperplate engraving presents a reconstructed elevation of the Thermæ Traiani — the Baths of Emperor Trajan — located on the Aventine Hill in Rome. The engraving is inscribed Thermæ Traiani Imperatoris in Monte Aventino Ad and depicts the monumental layout of the Roman bath complex, with enclosed colonnades, vaulted halls, and courtyards flanked by statues and ceremonial entrances. The lower part of the sheet includes a Latin caption describing the site's association with the Templum S. Prisca and references to the former Domus Aurea of Emperor Nero.The Baths of Trajan were constructed on the ruins of Nero’s Golden House (Domus Aurea) beginning around 104 AD under Emperor Trajan, with their formal inauguration occurring in 109 AD. As one of the great thermal monuments of ancient Rome, the complex demonstrated imperial grandeur and engineering sophistication.
