This hardcover book has a decorative covering that looks original to print. The edgings of the pages are in the same marbled blue, grey, and white designs that are on the outside of the book. The inside covers, both front and back, are decorated with the same pattern as the cover, but in pink. It measures H 5.5 W 3.5 D 1 inches. The corners of the binding are frayed but the spine is in good condition. The first two title pages have been cut out, and the title page is ripped from the bottom but still attached at the top. Some pages throughout the book are torn or are missing completely.
Oliver Wendell Holmes Sr. (American, 1809-1894) was an American physician, poet, and polymath based in Boston. Grouped among the fireside poets, he was acclaimed by his peers as one of the best writers of the day. His most famous prose works are the "Breakfast Table" series, which began with The Autocrat of the Breakfast Table. The Autocrat of the Breakfast Table is a collection of essays written by Oliver Wendell Holmes Sr. The essays were originally published in The Atlantic Monthly in 1857 and 1858 before being collected in book form.
