A U.S. Blue Star Service Flag, WWI-Era - A U.S. BLUE STAR SERVICE FLAG, WWI-ERA. A pieced cotton flag with an applique blue star on the obverse and reverse, within a white square within a red square, with a white canvas heading. The Blue Star Service Flag is designed to be displayed by families with members serving in the active military. It features a white field with a red border and at the center a blue star for each member of a family serving in the Armed Forces of the United States during a period of war or hostilities. The banner was designed in 1917 by U.S. Army Captain Robert L. Queisser of the Fifth Ohio Infantry, in honor of his two sons who were serving in World War I.
