But he was still inspired by the landscape, Stephanic said. The abstract work was bold and aggressive. From October 2005 to January 2006, Chappelear’s work was shown during an University of Maryland, University College show. One piece was purchased by the U.S. State department, Stephanic said. Recently, Chappelear’s art was returning to the more traditional realm, but his time spent on abstracts clearly stayed with him. The palette was enormously dynamic compared to his earlier ones which were softer, Stephanic said. He pushed the envelope always. He was a perfectionist and his work showed it. He wasn’t the only Chappelear on staff at CSM. His wife, Sue Chappelear’s show, Currents which featured ceramics inspired by the flow of water, was showcased in the Hungerford gallery starting in November 2010. Together, they created a ceramic piece that hangs in the Learning Resource Center on the La Plata campus. The couple’s works are often on display in galleries around Southern Maryland, including Carmen’s in Solomon’s Island, the Mattawoman Creek Art Center in Marbury and the North End Gallery in Leonardtown. Larry Chappelear worked in chalk, pencil and paint and other media. In addition to his talent as an artist, it will be Chappelear’s devotion to seeing his students succeed that many will remember.
