Antique c1860 Sunburst Quilt - Antique c1860 Sunburst Quilt measuring 76x91”. Comprised of 4 center Sunburst blocks, 30x31”, set straight 2 by 2 with 3” brown plaid sashing and 3.5” Flying Geese inner border. There is a 10” Sunburst Block Border along 2 sides, 5” wide half blocks along a third side, and a 2.5” wide striped fabric along the 4th side. It is It is hand pieced, hand appliqued, and hand quilted. Medium loft cotton batting and a brown cotton print reverse. The edge is finished with the back brought to the front and appliqued by hand. The quilt has NJ provenance. The consignor called it the Frelinghuysen House quilt and had a note written by the woman in Readington who sold it to her and who bought it from Mrs. Ribbans [whose husband was pharmacist at Ribban’s Drug Store in Somerville. She needed funds to care for him after being diagnosed with cancer. The Frelinghuysen House now accommodates the Raritan Public Library.
