Guna Mola Panel with Abstract Spirit Figure - Panama (Guna Yala), circa 1970s 14.5 × 19.5 inches A bold mola panel worked in three layers of reverse appliqué, appliqué, and embroidery featuring a large abstract spirit figure rendered in the classic Guna bilateral tradition. The figure dominates the composition, its broad squared shoulders and U-shaped head formed by multiple concentric bands of color — yellow, pink, teal, orange, and blue — channeled against a black ground. The torso narrows to a central waist with a scalloped or floral element at the chest, flanked by curving arms with nested concentric striping. The lower body splits into stylized legs terminating in detailed feet, each embellished with chevron embroidery and decorative stitching in contrasting colors. The figure's limbs and body are outlined in up to six concentric color channels, creating a vibrant optical rhythm across the panel. Small rectangular cutwork details and vertical slits in the lower border add additional textural interest. Fine hand-stitching throughout with consistent stitch density. Dense, fully filled composition with sophisticated cutwork featuring complex curves, nested concentric forms, and tight turns throughout the figure.
