Guna Mola Panel Crucifixion of Jesus - Panama (Guna Yala), circa 1970s 13.5 × 17 inches Boldly worked reverse appliqué mola panel depicting the Crucifixion, with a large central cross bearing the inscription ”JESUS” and a densely stitched figure of Christ with outstretched arms. Two thieves on flanking crosses occupy the lower left and right fields. A Roman soldier with a spear approaches from the lower left, accompanied by a small figure in ceremonial dress. Two standing mourners attend the right cross, while a prostrate figure in yellow outline lies at lower right. The composition is set against a black ground saturated throughout with rows of polychrome vertical dash forms. Executed in three layers of black, red, and orange cotton with extensive applied appliqué passages and polychrome embroidery throughout. Provenance: From the Parker & Neal Collection.
