Guna Mola Panel Butterfly Spirit Figure - Panama (Guna Yala), circa 1970s 17 × 20.5 inches Boldly worked reverse appliqué mola panel featuring a large central butterfly spirit figure with a prominent human face rendered in blue and red with embroidered hair, curling pink antennae, and white-outlined eyes. The figure's body is densely stitched in red with a pectoral ornament at center chest and a fringed lower torso. Four expansive wings radiate outward, each filled with densely arranged rows of oval and rectangular forms in red, orange, yellow, green, blue, and pink against a black ground, creating a richly saturated textile field. Zigzag bands traverse the lower wing registers. Executed in three layers of black, red, and orange cotton with extensive applied appliqué passages and polychrome embroidery throughout.
