Vintage 1949 Japanese Needles and Looms Book - Vintage Old Art Treasures from Japan's Needles and Looms, Kōrinsha 1949. This is a 1949 portfolio-style reference book edited by Rokuro Uemura and published by Kōrinsha Co., Ltd. The publication consists of an outer portfolio cover, a separate text booklet, and a collection of large-format loose color plates, all housed together as one work, possibly incomplete. The text booklet is titled ”The Art of Weaving and Dyeing in Japan” by Rokuro Uemura, translated by Shiho Sakanishi, and surveys Japanese textile history from the prehistoric period onward, noting the influence of Chinese culture during the Asuka (552–645 A.D.) and Tempyo (708–781 A.D.) periods. The color plates are large-format and individually mounted in heavy paper mats, depicting reproductions of historic Japanese textiles — brocades, embroidered silks, and woven patterns with motifs including chrysanthemums, wisteria, maple leaves, diamond lattice, and interlocking geometric grounds in rich, vibrant colors. The outer portfolio cover shows significant wear, toning, and tape repairs. The text booklet has a handwritten inscription on the front cover. The plates show some age-related toning and light spotting but are otherwise in good condition. This was part of a NYC Archival Collection of Textiles for reproduction and inspiration purposes.
